The Armor of God

Shawn Boonstra; Rich Carlson, PhD; Dick Duerksen, MA; Roscoe J Howard III, DMin; Dick Stenbakken, EdD share how Paul's first century words and descriptions of the Roman armor of his era apply to modern living and the challenging situations we face daily today.

The Belt of Truth:
Why in the world would Paul start describing a Roman soldier with something as ordinary and plain as a belt? What makes a belt so special that a discussion of life-saving armor would start with this piece of equipment?

The Breastplate of Righteousness:
How did the Romans make their body armor, and how functional was it against a foe in battle? What does righteousness mean for people today? Is there a "one size fits all" armor, or is Christ's righteousness tailor-made and custom fit for each believer?

The Gospel Sandals of Peace:
Solid footing is important in battle and was especially so in the hand-to-hand struggles of first century warfare. Paul says over and over that we are to "stand firm." What kind of footwear did a Roman soldier have, and how will knowing about it help me be successful?

The Shield of Faith:
There is a real surprise about how the Roman legions made their shields. This surprise will help define and develop faith in our daily living. How did the shield deal with those "flaming arrows" Paul talks about?

The Helmet of Salvation:

A helmet is a helmet, right? Not necessarily. The Roman battle helmet was not only a work of art, but it was also built to provide maximum protection from the hostile blows of an enemy. As good as it was in design, however, there were areas of vulnerability. Find out what they were, and how they were dealt with.

The Sword of the Spirit:
The gladius is the Roman sword everyone knows about. Yet the Romans had different kinds of swords for different uses. What are the applications and principles for us? How did the Roman soldier learn to use his sword? How do we learn to use our "sword" effectively in our struggles?

Other Pieces of Roman Military Equipment:
Jesus alluded to parts of it when he addressed crowds who listened to Him. We may have missed some important teachings because what was clear to His listeners, because of their experience and culture, is far from our modern experience. Segment seven explores some of these items.

So What?
That is the "bottom line" for all of us. Segment eight is an open sharing of the "Aha!" insights of the panelists as they study Ephesians 6:10-18 in depth. You, too, will find rich insights as you study.
