Welcoming Holiday Visitors

Christmas provides a unique opportunity for churches. Many people who don’t step into a church any other time during the year are looking for a place to visit during the holidays. How your church welcomes these visitors impacts their decision on whether or not to return after the holidays. Here are some ideas for welcoming new guests and helping them feel at home with your church family.

Special Programs

Christmas concerts and pageants can bring the church family together, plus provide opportunities for you to advertise your program and invite the public. Christmas Eve services are widely attended. Advertise your program in your local newspaper, post fliers around town, and encourage members to invite their friends, colleagues, and relatives.

Holiday Socials

Socials give members the chance to invite guests to fellowship with your church. An old-fashioned sleigh ride, talent show, and ice skating are great events for members and visitors alike.

Presents

Assemble gift baskets or bags to pass out at your Christmas Eve service, or while caroling in the community surrounding your church. You could compile a cookbook of members’ favorite recipes and include hot chocolate or apple cider packets. Add excerpts from the Christmas story from the Gospels and a copy of Steps to Christ. Don’t forget something with your church’s address and phone number that they will keep and use, such as a pen, note pad, or magnet.

For Church Families

The holidays also give opportunities for families to grow in closeness. Remember to include in your family traditions single people and others who live alone.

    • Keep Christmas cards and letters going! Stay in touch with relatives and friends by sending letters and pictures.
    • Take time to study the Christmas story with your family, and look for ways to apply its message today.
    • Start or pass on family traditions. Get out the rolling pin, cookie cutters, and sprinkles, and make cookies.
    • Have a holiday-themed worship and pray before opening presents.
    • Go around the table and list what you're thankful for before Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.
