The candle symbolizes light in the darkness of life, especially individual life, illumination; it is the symbol of holy illumination of the spirit of truth. John 8:12.
A rush candle uses a rush instead of a cotton wick. The rushes are saturated with tallow or wax and a thick coating is formed by successive drippings. They resemble ordinary candles.
Throughout church history, certain church traditions included lighting candles to signify the presence of the Holy Spirit within the space. The bouncing, burning light off of the wick can be a reminder to us that although we cannot see Him, the Holy Spirit inhabits believers, igniting a type of fire within us to make His name known.
