Chickens

  1. Find a verse in the Bible that talks about a chicken.

  2. What day were chickens created?

  3. What do chickens eat?

  4. What is the difference between a rooster and a hen? Make the sounds of each.

  5. How often does a hen lay eggs?

  6. What is it called when a hem wants to sit on the eggs?

    1. How does she keep the eggs warm?

    2. How long until the eggs hatch?

  7. Watch a video of the life cycle of the chicken?

  8. Test an egg to see whether it is fresh or not.

  9. Make a chicken craft.

  10. Identify several breeds of chickens by visiting a farm or someone that raises chickens. If visiting a farm isn’t possible, watch a video about chickens.

  3. Worms, insects, seeds, grains, snails, slugs, fruits, and vegetables.

  4. Roosters – Brighter colored comb and waddle. Saddle feathers are more pointed. Longer more curved tail feathers. Bigger legs with spurs. Colors are more vibrant. Cock-a-doodle- doo. Hens- Smaller comb and waddles. Rounded saddle feathers. Squawk, cluck. Show a picture of a rooster and a hen.

  5. Most hens will lay 1 egg per day. It takes a hen 24-26 hours to create an egg. Most chickens will slow down on egg production during the winter months.

  6. Broody.
    a. Sits on top of the eggs and covers them completely. b. 21 days.

  7. There are many short videos available on the internet.

  8. One method: Ahead of time leave an egg on the counter for a couple days prior. Fill a bowl with water. Use a refrigerated egg and the one from the counter and place them in the water. If the egg sinks it is fresh. If it bobs around on the surface, then it is bad.

  9. Search the internet for a chicken craft.

  10. Backyard chickens are becoming more common and there may be someone in your church or in your area that has chickens and would be willing to allow you to visit or possibly bring one to an Adventurer meeting to show. If not, YouTube has many good videos about chickens
